With the constant battle against aging, electric currents are used in so many different ways. I recently spoke with Intothegloss.com about NuFACE, which is a device that we use at Art of Skin MD as well as sell for patients to use at home as a part of their daily beauty regimens. We use electric “current” in so many facets of dermatology. The hyfercator used to cauterize vessels during skin surgery is electrically based. Radiofrequency, a technology that uses electrical current, is used in many device applications from skin tightening to fat reduction. Microcurrent is a miniature, lesser powered, very distant cousin to some of the technologies I’ve described. At our clinic, we offer the NuFACE, which uses the mircrocurrent. Continue reading

So much is the trend in cosmetic dermatology for subtle, natural-appearing true facial rejuvenation. The importance of balanced facial volume restoration is now recognized due to a wealth of anatomical studies published in the medical literature in the last 10 years. Skin integrity changes over time as our facial volume deflates. This sagging and deflation can be addressed. The new paradigm in dermatology and plastic surgery is restoration of youthful volume and facial contours. Addressing loss of volume is addressed with facial fillers or volumizers and skin texture changes and laxity with skin tightening procedures. What are two products and devices we can use to address volume and skin laxity? Well, Sculptra for volume and Ultherapy for lift. In a recent TV broadcast on the San Diego Union Tribune, I address the appropriate techniques for addressing the aging face through true, complete facial rejuvenation. Catch my discussion with Taylor Baldwin of UT-TV in the by clicking on the clip below: Sculptra works as a volumizing agent, inducing new collagen growth in the areas of placement. The process is gradual but long-lasting, so changes are subtle over time...it allows those treated with Sculptra to be discrete about their treatment. Ultherapy harnesses the power of ultrasound to lift and tighten tissues. It is the only FDA-approved device for neck lifting, and it is remarkably helpful in addressing skin looseness called laxity in areas around the brows, lower face, and jawline. Find out about our summer specials at Art of Skin MD on both facial and neck rejuvenation. To find out more, contact us through our Art of Skin MD website or by calling us at 858.792.7546.
Sculptra is something I have thought a lot about lately. Right now I am in the process of writing a book chapter on this facial revolumizing agent. Pouring over the literature I feel like I am bursting at the seams to share some of the insights about our use of Sculptra over the past decade. Inspired by this knowledge, here are three short video vignettes highlighting the use of Sculptra in the upper face (temples and brows), midface (cheeks and lateral jawline), and lower face (chin, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines). Sculptra to the Upper face: Sculptra to the Mid-face: Sculptra to the Lower face: The new face of rejuvenation is natural, subtle, and truly restoring. We now understand the important role of fat compartments and bony loss in the aging face. Thankfully, we can disguise many of these changes through volumetric restoration of the face with today's fillers. Sculptra has the distinct advantage of gradual, long-lasting volume replacement. It works by stimulating our own body to produce collagen in the areas of placement, a process called "neocollagenesis." Therefore Sculptra is termed a "biostimulatory agent." Sculptra can be combined with other procedures for a synergistic effect. While Sculptra provides "lift" to tissues through volume re-inflation, combining this injectable with Ulthera, an ultrasound technology can provide superior results in terms of lifting the brow, defining the jawline, and improving jowls. Other fillers can be combined with Sculptra use. The temporary numbing effect for Sculptra injection makes it an excellent complement to use of hyaluronic acid fillers such as Belotero, Juvederm and Restylane around the mouth and lips. Voluma, a new hyaluronic acid filler from the Juvederm family of products, acts in a similar fashion to the deep filling effect of Sculptra. It could be used initially to help fill the face as Sculptra is used over time to gradually rebuild other areas of collagen growth over time. Our face isn't the only skin we need to take close and careful care for as we spring into summer. Most of us are more cognizant about protecting our facial skin, but we neglect to take care of our necks, chest, and hands. Over time, exposure to sun and environmental elements can cause telltale aging changes to the chest. UV exposure damages collagen in the second layer of our skin called the dermis. This loss of support results in skin textural changes and vertical wrinkles in the decollete area. So what can be done to improve the appearance of this aged skin? Sculptra! Completed as a series of treatments, Sculptra injections to the chest promote new collagen growth, strengthening and thickening the soft tissue and skin of the chest area. This increased support and scaffolding lessens the appearance of skin irregularities and lines in the V-shaped area of the chest. Watch the YouTube video below to see Dr. Palm demonstrate how Sculptra in placed along the decollete area for chest rejuvenation: Other procedures can be combined with Sculptra treatment for total chest rejuvenation. Laser and light procedures can improve the appearance of the skin by eliminating color changes and further improving skin texture. IPL can eliminate brown spots and broken blood vessels. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) can treat photodamage and precancerous spots called "actinic keratoses." The eCO2 fractionated laser skin resurfacing procedure can smooth and tighten skin. Ultherapy can be used in the chest area to tighten and lift loose skin. Interested in more information on chest rejuvenation? Having completed Ultherapy on six patients this past week alone, I am pleased to say how comfortable patients undergoing skin tightening treatment with myself (Dr. Melanie Palm). Using local nerve blocks on the neck, lower face, and around the brow area, Ulthera can be completed in about an hour in complete comfort. Skin tightening occurs gradually over a several month period following treatment. The treatment itself feels like tingling and slight warmth. The patient experience during Ultherapy is entirely dependent on how the physician prepares he/she for treatment and we at Art of Skin MD are proud to say that treatment is completed with Dr. Palm WITHOUT SEDATES and using only LOCAL NUMBING. Check out Ultherapy and a brief explanation with Dr. Palm through our YouTube video: Questions about Ultherapy? See our Before and After Ultherapy gallery. Schedule a consultation by contacting Art of Skin MD online or call us at (858) 792-7546 (SKIN).
