First-Time Fillers: A Patient’s Perspective

I was 31 years old when I first had Botox injections. Up until that point, I had really only done peels and facials. I’ve never liked needles, so the thought of them going into my face was not one I was fond of. However, I also was not fond of the creases between my eyebrows, so off to the dermatologist I went. And when I saw the results, I wished I had started sooner.

When deciding where to go, I did my research. The one place I kept hearing wonderful things about was Art of Skin MD – that the facility is state of the art, the providers are the best of the best and the staff is wonderful. It made my decision easy, and I scheduled my consultation. From the moment I made my initial appointment, they lived up to their stellar reputation. And upon arriving to my appointment, everything I’d heard about Art of Skin MD was absolutely true. Another one of the top reasons that I came to Art of Skin MD as a patient is that looking natural is incredibly important to me, and they are known for doing just that. It’s not that I don’t want to age, it is that I want to age gracefully.  I immediately loved that both Dr. Palm and her Registered Nurse, Jessica Scott, approach toxins with that in mind – my face looks fresh, never frozen.

Dr. Melanie Palm & Jessica Scott, RN

As time went by, I started to notice some fine lines around my lips from all of the years of using straws to protect my teeth from my love of coffee, tea and red wine. This, coupled with the volume I had lost in my cheeks causing marionette lines, made it clear that it was time to think about fillers.

In the conversation I had with Jessica, she answered all of my questions and eased all of my fears regarding looking “done” or “fake” – and I knew I was in great hands. She talked to me about medications and foods to avoid leading up to the injections to prevent bruising, and I started taking Arnika Forte to help further prevent bruising and swelling. We decided on a Restylane Lyft Package – this included Restylane Lyft and Restylane – the two fillers that would be best for what I needed. We started the process with before photos, which is exciting because it’s easy to get used to what I see in the mirror daily and forget what I looked like even a few weeks ago compared to now. Then, she applied topical numbing cream on my face like a mask. I sat comfortably and worked while my face numbed for an hour. Then, she cleaned the numbing cream off of my face and it was time to get started.

She talked me through every step, “you’re going to feel a little poke here” and “one, two, three” then the tiny poke (which I barely felt). She created volume in my cheeks, filled my lip lines and put a little Restylane in my nasal labial folds to smooth out the lines that had been created from that volume loss in my cheeks previously. She then handed me an ice ball, and told me to ice for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off that day. I instantly loved the results! Friends who have seen me since have commented on how rested and fresh I look, which leads to me telling them about my experience of doing fillers with Jessica!

When having fillers done, the injector is truly an artist and the patient’s face is the work of art – but – it’s also your face. Keeping that in mind, it is imperative to trust that the injector is both incredibly knowledgeable and skilled to ensure that the outcome will be you looking like a well rested, fresher version of you. For me, Jessica and Dr. Palm both embody everything a great injector should be and I couldn’t be happier with my results!

I so loved the staff and the culture at Art of Skin MD, when a position opened up to join the team, I jumped at it! If you’re interested in scheduling a consultation and have any questions, I hope you’ll call and talk to one of us here at the office! We are truly happy to guide you through the entire process, and enjoy getting to know the wonderful people who come visit us at Art of Skin MD!

Looking forward to seeing you all very soon! -Mandy

How To Attain & Maintain A Healthy Scalp

Scalp health is vital to hair growth. It’s as simple as that. The reasons, though, are a bit more complex. Here, Dr. Palm breaks down the signs our scalps give us that say they are either healthy or not-so-healthy. And if yours is saying the latter, not to worry – she also offers tips on reviving the often forgotten area.

Our scalps supply the network of blood vessels that nourish the base of the hair bulb, allowing it to grow with the proper nutrition, oxygenation and removal of toxic byproducts. When one of these necessities is interrupted, hair can be greatly effected. The result can be hair loss, sudden shedding, loss of hair density and even changes in hair architecture such as decreased hair strand width, sudden brittle hair or even a change in color.

Are you having one or more of these symptoms? If so, I’m sure you’re wondering how can you know if your scalp’s health is the reason? Well, according to Dr. Palm, it really depends on the underlying cause for the symptoms. Non-scarring inflammatory conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis (or inflammatory dandruff) can cause redness, flaking, scaling, itching, tenderness and rashes. In some rare cases, acne-like lesions may result. Or, another reason could be an external exposure to a noxious substance, such as a hair dye someone is allergic to, which can cause redness, swelling, itching, hives, scaling, oozing, bleeding and in very rare cases, a systemic-wide body response called anaphylaxis. Eliminating Double Chin Fat with Kybella

There are a few areas where the body can store fat that are difficult to get rid of with healthy diets and workouts alone – and the submentum, or area under the chin, is definitely one of those areas. Luckily, there is Kybella!   Check out our deal that we are offering for Kybella this month in celebration of all of the success we have had so far with patients and eliminating the dreaded "double chin." Kybella expert treats submittal fullness San Diego   Kybella is the first FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment that targets the fat that creates a double chin. It is a naturally-occurring bile acid, called deoxycholic acid, that is injected into the fat beneath the chin and destroys fat cells. In the body, the job of deoxycholic acid is to break down dietary fats in the gut after eating a meal.  It therefore makes sense to exploit this natural process for other areas in the body that have unwanted fat such as the double chin Continue reading

Lifting & Firming In Office & At Home

With the constant battle against aging, electric currents are used in so many different ways. I recently spoke with Intothegloss.com about NuFACE, which is a device that we use at Art of Skin MD as well as sell for patients to use at home as a part of their daily beauty regimens. We use electric “current” in so many facets of dermatology.  The hyfercator used to cauterize vessels during skin surgery is electrically based.  Radiofrequency, a technology that uses electrical current, is used in many device applications from skin tightening to fat reduction.  Microcurrent is a miniature, lesser powered, very distant cousin to some of the technologies I’ve described.  At our clinic, we offer the NuFACE, which uses the mircrocurrent. Cellfina: Right candidate for treating cellulite

This month, I am featured in InStyle Magazine talking about the new Cellfina Treatment to get rid of cellulite. We are very excited to be one of a few practices in the local area to offer Cellfina! The Cellfina System is the only FDA-cleared minimally invasive procedure that has been clincally proven to improve the appearance of cellulite for at least two years. This treatment specifically targets stubborn, discrete dimple-like cellulite. The results are superb and quite visible, even as soon as at a three-day follow up. Ideal candidates for the Cellfina System treatment are:
  • Reasonably Fit
  • At a stable weight
  • Have dimple-like cellulite
  • Have good skin tone (too lax of skin won’t yield ideal results)
Cellfina is completed in the office as a single, one-time procedure completely under local anesthetic.  There is minimal downtime and patients are only asked to wear a light compression garment like Spanx or workout pants for several days after the procedure.  To see the procedure in action, check out the YouTube videos below where Dr. Palm demonstrates marking, numbing, and treatment of the cellulite on a real patient!   Continue reading

Art of Skin MD is proud to unveil Cellfina, the newest FDA-cleared device for treatment of cellulite on the buttocks and thighs.  Unlike other devices on the market, Cellfina offers long lasting results of at least 2 years, and likely longer.   We were proud to unveil this technology as a "2016 what to watch for" for cosmetic surgery innovations debuting this year.  See me, Dr. Melanie Palm, discuss this effective treatment for dimpling cellulite in addition to other innovations such as Kybella (for fat of the double chin) and super silky lip filler Restylane Silk.  You can even see my expert injectable hands at work with a photo of the Restylane Lyft model that I injected and is featured in national ads in print media.  Check out the San Diego XETV CW6 clip below with news anchor Brooke Landau: Continue reading
