Juvederm® Voluma Filler Injections

The Non-surgical Facial Wrinkle Treatment in the San Diego Area

Dr. Melanie Palm is a noted expert in the use of non-surgical injectables – including Juvederm’s Voluma cheek volumizer – with offices in Solana Beach, CA just north of San Diego. She is a sitting member of the Advisory Board for Allergan (the company that makes Voluma), as well as a physician trainer, clinical researcher, and consultant for Allergan. Dr. Palm was also one of the first physicians in the United States to be able to offer Voluma to her patients.

What is Voluma?

Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler to the Juvederm family of products. Hyaluronic acid is a common component to the second layer of the skin, and it helps provide structure to the skin. Voluma, as it name infers, helps provide volume to areas of the face that have deflated and become sunken over time. It lifts tissue, giving a true liquid facelift.

How is Voluma different from other hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm or Restylane?

Voluma has a much different consistency from other earlier generation products like Juvederm Ultra or Restylane. It is composed of shorter chains of hyaluronic acid with significant connections or “cross links.” In general, the more crosslinks, the greater the lifting power of a hyaluronic acid filler. This gives Voluma superior lifting capacity for sagging tissues compared to many other injectables. Voluma also has some free chains of hyaluronic acid that do not have crosslinks. This allows softness and pliability to the product so that it can be molded in place.

How much do Voluma filler injections cost in the San Diego area and how much will I need?

It is likely that Voluma will be dispensed as a larger volume than traditional 1 cc syringes such as Juvederm, Restylane, or Perlane. According to the clinical studies, the average amount of Voluma needed to full cheek correction was approximately 9 cc. Treatment requirements will vary depending on each individual.

Voluma FAQ

Voluma has received approval for injection in the midface to lift sunken cheeks and allow true facial re-volumizing. However, it is likely that many physicians will use Voluma in other areas beyond the cheeks to fill and contour. The temples, jawline, marionette lines and even the back of the hands may benefit from the lifting and filling properties of Voluma.

Yes, Voluma allows immediate correction of volume deficiency in the face.

As a hyaluronic acid filler product, Voluma is broken down naturally by your body over time. According to clinical trials the filling effect of Voluma may last approximately 18 months, although individual results vary.

Hyaluronic acid products such as Voluma have a high level of safety in the hands of properly trained physicians. Mild swelling and bruising are possible. A small amount of discomfort is also possible following injection with Voluma as a larger needle is necessary to deliver the product. In general, Voluma is a little to no downtime procedure.

Yes. The filling effect of Voluma can be erased if undercorrection is desired. An enzyme called hyaluronidase, marketed under the brand names Vitrase or Hylenex, can be used to breakdown unwanted deposits of hyaluronic acid including Voluma.

The use of Voluma is somewhat similar to other hyaluronic acid filler products. Voluma is placed more deeply than other products to reinflate deeper tissues including facial fat. It can be used in a similar manner to fat transfer procedures. Because of the thickness of the gel, a larger needle is used for placement. With proper technique, minimal punctures are required and pain is reduced by lidocaine incorporation into the product and by the use of topical numbing cream prior to Voluma injection.

Yes, Voluma may complement the use of other cosmetic products and procedures. Neuromodulators that relax overactive muscles such as Botox and Dysport can be used with Voluma but may not necessarily be performed on the same visit. Skin tightening procedures such as Ulthera are an excellent complement to the lifting and filling capabilities of Voluma.
