What is Liquid Injectable Silicone and How is It Used?

Silicone is an inert substance that has been used in an off-label manner for facial volumizing for over a half of a century. Liquid injectable silicone is FDA-approved for use in ophthalmology, but highly purified, medical grade silicone can be used in an “off-label” manner for soft tissue augmentation and the correction of scars.

Liquid Silicone Injections – The Microdroplet Technique

Liquid injectable silicone is injected into the area of desired treatment using the microdroplet technique. Very small amounts of silicone product are injected with multiple injections in a treatment area over a series of treatments, usually spaced at 4 to 6 week intervals. Liquid injectable silicone has minimal tissue reactivity. Presence of liquid injectable silicone using the microdroplet technique stimulates new collagen formation in the area of treatment, leading to volume replacement and softening of the appearance of treated scars.

Who is a Good Candidate for Liquid Silicone Injections?

The use of liquid silicone injections as a facial filler is discussed with patients carefully, weighing the risks and benefits of treatment. Since liquid silicone is a permanent filler, Dr. Palm highly recommends initially using a temporary filler like Restylane, Juvederm, or Juvederm XC in the area of desired augmentation first prior to silicone placement. This gives both Dr. Palm and the patient the chance to evaluate the appearance and correction of the area before implementing more permanent correction. Several treatment sessions are necessary for volume correction with liquid injectable silicone.

Liquid Silicone Injections for Acne Scarring and Soft Tissue Augmentation

Significant acne scarring often responds well to liquid silicone injection treatment. Depressed traumatic scars respond favorably as well. Lip augmentation, facial volume loss, and HIV lipoatrophy have all been treated successfully with liquid injectable silicone and reported in the medical literature.
