What is Restylane Silk?
Restylane Silk is the newest hyaluronic acid filler to the Restylane family of products. Hyaluronic acid is a common component to the second layer of the skin, and it helps provide structure to the skin. Restylane Silk, as it name infers, is a sooth, silky formulation of smaller particle hyaluronic acid gel. It provides improvement of fine lines around the mouth and corrects volume loss of the lips as well as smoker lines or "lipstick lines" around the lips.
Is Restylane Silk available in the U.S.?
Yes! Restylane Silk was FDA-approved for use in the U.S. Market in June 2014. Restylane will become available to U.S. specialty physicians in late 2014. Restylane Silk already has a good safety profile and has been approved for use in Canada and Europe.
How does Restylane Silk differ from other hyaluronic acid products like Restylane, Juvederm, or Belotero?
The Restylane family of products, Perlane, Restylane, and now Restylane Silk are all hyaluronic acid gel products composed of gel particles. The different products of this family are distinguished by their particle size, imparting different filling uses for each product.
Restylane Silk differs from other products in the Restylane family by its PARTICLE SIZE. Perlane has larger particles that make it ideal for lifting tissues and creating deep volume in the face. Restylane has a mid range particle size that makes it versatile as a filler from enhancing lip size to filling in facial volume loss. Restylane Silk has the smallest particle size, allowing it to smooth fine wrinkles such as perioral rhytids (lipstick lines) or for lip augmentation.
Juvederm Ultra and the family of Allergan products (Voluma, Juvederma Ultra Plus) are cohesive gels, meaning they are not formed of particles. They provide a smooth result and attract water to the area of placement. This may be more or less idea depending on the area Dr. Palm is hoping to enhance or correct.
Restylane Silk can be categorized as a fine line filler, somewhat similar to Belotero Balance. Belotero Balance is a cohesive gel, not a particle, and has a low concentration. Belotero may or may not have a shorter duration compared to Restylane Silk.read more
Where can Restylane Silk be injected?
Restylane Silk is FDA-approved for the correction of perioral lines (smoker lines or lipstick lines around the mouth) as well as for lip enhancement. In addition to eliminating wrinkles around the mouth and plumping lips, Restylane Silk can be used to correct other fine lines such as crow's feet, forehead lines, and horizontal neck lines. Restylane Silk, due to its small particle size, may also be ideal for filling volume loss in the upper eyelid, tear troughs, and eyebrow. These uses are consider off-label.
Are results from Restylane Silk immediate?
Yes, Restylane Silk allows immediate correction of fine lines of the face.
How long does Restylane Silk last?
As a hyaluronic acid filler product, Restylane Silk is broken down naturally by your body over time. According to clinical trials the improvement from Restylane Silk may last approximately 6-12 months, although individual results vary.
What are the possible side effects and downtime following Restylane Silk placement?
Hyaluronic acid products such as Restylane Silk have a high level of safety in the hands of properly trained physicians. Mild swelling and bruising are possible. Restylane Silk has a numbing agent, lidocaine, pre-incorporated into the filler, making injection more comfortable. In general, Restylane Silk is a little to no downtime procedure so long as proper medication precautions to avoid bruising are followed.
Is Restylane Silk reversible if I don’t like the results?
Yes. The line correction effect from Restylane Silk can be erased if undercorrection is desired. An enzyme called hyaluronidase, marketed under the brand name Vitrase or Hyalenex, can be used to breakdown unwanted deposits of hyaluronic acid including Restylane Silk. Alternatively, Restylane Silk can be removed by a small puncture and manual pressure if an area of uneven filler deposit exists. However, the occurrence of this in experienced hands such as Dr. Palm's is rare.
What is the Restylane Silk procedure like?
The use of Restylane is somewhat unique to most other hyaluronic acid filler products. The placement technique for fine lines is most similar to Belotero Balance. Prior to placement, Dr. Palm provides topical anesthetic cream to the treated area.
Once topical numbing has been achieved, the filler is placed very superficially to fill fine lines around the mouth and elsewhere on the face and/or neck. Lidocaine numbing is added into the filler itself to make the filler placement comfortable. Because of the superficial nature of the filler placement, significant bruising is rare. The procedure itself, depending on the amount of wrinkles to be improved, takes approximately 15-30 minutes to perform with skilled hands.
Can I use Restylane Silk with other procedures?
Yes, Restylane Silk may complement the use of other cosmetic products and procedures. Neuromodulators that relax overactive muscles such as Botox and Dysport can be used with Restylane but may not necessarily be performed on the same visit. Skin resurfacing procedures such as ResurFX or ECO2 may be used prior to Restylane Silk placement to smooth wrinkles, with Restylane Silk filling in the remaining gaps.
How much does Restylane Silk cost and how much do I need?
Prices for Restylane Silk depend on the severity of wrinkles to be treated and the numbers of syringes to be injected. As the degree of improvement with Restylane Silk is highly dependent on the injector, it is encouraged that a board-certified dermatologist perform the procedure.
