What is Granuloma Annulare?
Granuloma annulare (GA) is a benign skin condition that can affect people of all ages. The cause for granuloma annulare is unknown, and several types exist, from single skin spots to more generalized cases involving much of the skin. Granuloma annulare typically appears as skin-colored to red-purple bumps usually on the hands, fingers, feet, knees, or low back.
While granuloma annulare typically appears on the hands or feet, a generalized form may cause skin lesions to appear all over the body. GA may not cause any symptoms, or it may burn or be extremely itchy. Some cases of granuloma annulare in women have been associated with a thyroid disease called autoimmune thyroiditis. Most cases of GA resolve spontaneously without treatment.
A skin biopsy leads to confirmation of the diagnosis of granuloma annulare and sometimes causes spontaneous cure. Topical steroids, light therapy, and oral prescription medications have been tried in widespread cases of granuloma annulare. Small outbreaks of granuloma annulare usually respond extremely well to topical steroids or small injections of steroids into the skin lesions themselves.
