What is Lichen Planus?
Lichen planus is an itchy skin rash that usually presents as pink, geometric, raised bumps that can occur anywhere on the body but prefer the wrists, ankles, or genitalia. Lichen planus frequently affects the mouth and appears as erosions or white, wispy patches on the inside of the cheek. Nail changes may also occur with lichen planus.
What Causes Lichen Planus?
Lichen planus is caused by an immune response by the body. The exact cause of this abnormal immune response is not known, however in some people, certain conditions and/or medications may trigger lichen planus:
- Hepatitis C infection
- Flu vaccine
- Some medications for heart disease, high blood pressure, and arthritis
- Exposure to certain pigments, chemicals and metals (including gold dental fillings)
- NSAIDs like ibuprofen (e.g. Advils, Motrin IB) and naproxen (e.g. Aleve)

There are a number of effective treatment options for lichen plans including topical steroids and other prescription medications as well as light therapy. Occasionally oral medication is needed to help control the skin eruption.
