Emtone Cellulite & Skin Tightening Treatment

Non-Surgical Body Contouring in the San Diego Area

Dr. Melanie Palm is an expert in the use of Emtone to tighten and tone skin, remove stubborn cellulite, and improve skin laxity without surgery. She serves as a clinical investigator, advisory board member, and speaker for BTL, the maker of Emtone. Her offices are located in Solana Beach, CA just north of San Diego.

What is Emtone?

Emtone is a no-downtime, no pain, in-office procedure used for cellulite treatment. Clinical studies have also demonstrated Emtone’s usefulness in treating looseness of the skin. Emtone is FDA-cleared as a massage device for the temporary reduction in the appearance of cellulite. It also provides heating for the purpose of raising tissue temperature for selective medical conditions, the relief of pain, muscle spasms, and to increase local circulation. Emtone is completed as a series of sessions and gently warms the skin to encourage collagen growth and improve skin texture.

What is Dr. Palm’s Expertise with Emtone?

Dr. Palm was the first physician in San Diego to gain expertise with Emtone. She is involved with ongoing clinical studies regarding RF technology and sits on the Medical Board of BTL, the manufacturer of Emtone.

How Does Emtone Work for Cellulite & Skin Tightening?

Emtone is a combination device that simultaneously delivers monopolar radiofrequency device and pressure wave therapy to the skin. Specialized, safe electrical energy is delivered by the Emtone handpiece to the skin. A grounding pad, usually placed on one’s back during the treatment, ensures safe delivery of the radiofrequency. At the same time, the Emtone device emits acoustic waves that disrupt and stimulate the skin.

During treatment, radiofrequency energy flows from the treatment tip to the skin, warming the skin to approximately 42 to 44 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, collagen undergoes structural changes. Over a period of weeks to months following treatment, new collagen growth is encouraged, leading to improvement in skin texture, laxity, and cellulite.

Emtone Treatment FAQ

How much does Emtone cost?
Emtone is priced as a package of four sessions to encourage the best results. Pricing is based on the area of treatment. Discounts are provided when multiple treatment areas are treated and for occasional follow-up maintenance treatments.

How does a Emtone treatment Feel? Does Emtone hurt?
Emtone is a well-tolerated procedure that requires no anesthesia. Treatment to a single area takes approximately 12-15 minutes. Emtone treatment is well tolerated and feels like a hot stone massage. During treatment, the Emtone handpiece glides over the skin with the help of a conductive and moisturizing lotion. Continual, circular movement of the Emtone handpiece and internal safety mechanisms ensures that no area of skin becomes hot or uncomfortable.

How many Emtone treatments are recommended?

Emtone treatment consists of an initial series of 4 treatments. They are performed twice a week over 2 weeks. Occasional maintenance treatments are recommended periodically (usually every 6-12 months) to maintain results.

Is there any downtime following an Emtone treatment?

Not at all. Unlike many other skin tightening and cellulite treatment devices, Emtone requires no downtime following treatment. The skin fells warm to touch or pink for several minutes following treatment. Patients may resume normal activities immediately following treatment.

When will I notice results following Emtone treatment?

As Emtone works by stimulating new collagen growth and improving local tissue circulation, results are not immediate. Typically, results from Emtone are seen within a period of weeks to months although some patients express pleasing improvements even sooner.

Will I need re-treatment? How long do results last following Emtone?

Emtone creates visible improvement of cellulite and skin textural changes such as skin laxity. However, the results are typically not permanent and occasional maintenance treatments are always encouraged. Typically, patients may have a “touch-up” session once every 3-12 months, although the frequency is highly dependent on the individual.

Who is a good candidate for Emtone?

Emtone improves skin laxity, which typically develops in patients in their 30s-50s. Patients with relatively good skin elasticity or “spring back” respond more readily to treatment. Younger patients may have more dramatic responses to Emtone treatment. Patients with poor skin texture may have more modest results or require more frequent treatments. Anyone seeking skin tightening or mild body contouring of stubborn areas of fat without surgery may benefit from Emtone.

What areas of the body can be treated with Emtone?

Both the lower and upper body can benefit from Emtone treatment. Cellulite and skin laxity of the buttocks, thighs, and knees benefit from bulk heating and resulting new collagen growth and skin tightening. Mommy makeovers of the abdomen may be appropriate with Emtone, especially in women with relatively little abdominal fat and skin laxity as a major issue. Skin laxity of the upper arms are also another area that may be targeted by simultaneous radiofrequency and targeted pressure energies from Emtone.

What are the possible side effects of Emtone? Are there any contraindications to Emtone treatment?

Adverse effects from Emtone are uncommon and mild in nature. Mild redness or a hive-like reaction is possible but rare immediately following Emtone. A burn or nerve injury is extremely unlikely given the automatic shut-off safety features on this radiofrequency device. Patients with an implantable metal device area contraindicated from Emtone treatment.

Can I combine Emtone with other procedures?

Yes. A combination approach to cellulite and skin laxity often yields superior results.

For cellulite, Emtone may be used with other noninvasive and minimally invasive treatments to smooth skin. Dimple-like skin requires subcision release and greatly benefits from Cellfina first, followed by Emtone.   Fine, wavy cellulite texture is more significantly improved by combining the RF & acoustic wave technology of Emtone with biostimulatory injectables and fillers such as Sculptra and Radiesse.

For skin laxity and body contouring, Radiesse and Sculptra can stimulate collagen while Emtone tightens tissue.

For body contouring, Emtone may be part of a comprehensive approach to reducing fat, building, muscle, and improving skin texture. Emtone may be used following fat reduction procedures such as liposuctionCoolSculpting, or VanquishEmsculpt, a noninvasive muscle building and toning device, can be used on the buttocks, abdomen or arms in combination treatment with Emtone for a more holistic approach to body rejuvenation.
