Kybella is the first FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment that targets the fat that creates a double chin. It is a naturally-occurring bile acid, called deoxycholic acid, that is injected into the fat beneath the chin and destroys fat cells. In the body, the job of deoxycholic acid is to break down dietary fats in the gut after eating a meal. It therefore makes sense to exploit this natural process for other areas in the body that have unwanted fat such as the double chin
I administer a series of injections of Kybella into the neck and area under the chin over a period of weeks to months to help minimize or eliminate the pesky fat in the under-chin area. The treatments are typically done as a series, ranging from 2 – 4 sessions that are usually spaced 6 – 8 weeks apart. There is no need for numbing and each injection session is quick – taking only a few minutes. We take priority in making patients comfortable and knowledgeable about the treatment. Therefore, although all patients are treated with ice as a numbing agent prior to treatment, it is always possible to use other adjunctive numbing therapies such as numbing injection dots or topical anesthetic. However, most patients find that the procedure is easy and tolerable, with mild tingling lasting for 5-10 minutes after treatment.
Patients at Art of Skin MD are also supplied with care tips that contain helpful instructions and expected recovery information for their reference at home. As with any procedure, there are possible side effects that are discussed later in this Kybella blog entry. However, most patients resume normal activities within 0-3 days following injection treatment with deoxycholic acid.

The best candidates for Kybella are patients who have good skin elasticity, with little sagging or laxity. There is a little downtime with this procedure that patients should be aware of. Patients can expect to be swollen in the injection area for 5 – 7 days post treatment. Kybella has left patients with significant improvements in the chin and jawline area with minimal side effects.
