There are a few areas where the body can store fat that are difficult to get rid of with healthy diets and workouts alone – and the submentum, or area under the chin, is definitely one of those areas. Luckily, there is Kybella! Check out our deal that we are offering for Kybella this month in celebration of all of the success we have had so far with patients and eliminating the dreaded “double chin.”
Kybella is the first FDA-approved, non-surgical treatment that targets the fat that creates a double chin. It is a naturally-occurring bile acid, called deoxycholic acid, that is injected into the fat beneath the chin and destroys fat cells. In the body, the job of deoxycholic acid is to break down dietary fats in the gut after eating a meal. It therefore makes sense to exploit this natural process for other areas in the body that have unwanted fat such as the double chin
I administer a series of injections of Kybella into the neck and area under the chin over a period of weeks to months to help minimize or eliminate the pesky fat in the under-chin area. The treatments are typically done as a series, ranging from 2 – 4 sessions that are usually spaced 6 – 8 weeks apart. There is no need for numbing and each injection session is quick – taking only a few minutes. We take priority in making patients comfortable and knowledgeable about the treatment. Therefore, although all patients are treated with ice as a numbing agent prior to treatment, it is always possible to use other adjunctive numbing therapies such as numbing injection dots or topical anesthetic. However, most patients find that the procedure is easy and tolerable, with mild tingling lasting for 5-10 minutes after treatment.
Patients at Art of Skin MD are also supplied with care tips that contain helpful instructions and expected recovery information for their reference at home. As with any procedure, there are possible side effects that are discussed later in this Kybella blog entry. However, most patients resume normal activities within 0-3 days following injection treatment with deoxycholic acid.
I am currently among a select few dermatologists and plastic surgeons selected as a speaker and clinical researcher for Kybella. Art of Skin MD is currently a study site for the Kybella CONTOUR study. I am also a physician trainer, meaning I teach other dermatologists and cosmetic surgeons how to properly treat patients with Kybella, so I definitely consider this treatment as one of my areas of expertise.
Kybella has truly been a treatment with very high patient satisfaction. Having had much experience as a clinical researcher and injector for the product, we have exceptional and early experience with Kybella, and outstanding results. Check out our own patient’s before and after below:

The best candidates for Kybella are patients who have good skin elasticity, with little sagging or laxity. There is a little downtime with this procedure that patients should be aware of. Patients can expect to be swollen in the injection area for 5 – 7 days post treatment. Kybella has left patients with significant improvements in the chin and jawline area with minimal side effects.
Kybella may be a part of a more comprehensive treatment program for full facial balancing and rejuvenation. Kybella can successfully be combined with injectable fillers such as Sculptra, Voluma, Juvederm, or Restylane to achieve a chiseled jawline with a liquid facelift
