The upper eyelid skin is delicate. This area of the eye has the thinnest skin on the body, and it easily shows signs of aging and irritation. Traditionally, a blepharoplasty, or surgery of the eyelid skin, has been used to address aging changes of the upper eyelid. However, traditional eyelid surgery without volume replacement may leave some patients looking older due to a skeletonized (hollowing) appearance to the eye area. In many cases, there are numerous nonsurgical approaches to upper eyelid rejuvenation that yield dramatic and natural-looking results.

Crepiness (fine textural changes) and wrinkling of the skin may be addressed non-surgically with either radiofrequency (Protégé Elite) treatment or laser skin resurfacing. RF treatment is completed as a series of no downtime treatment with periodic maintenance, while laser skin resurfacing often produces more dramatic results but has downtime associated with the procedure. Mild excess skin of the upper eyelid is often improved following either of these approaches.

Many patients note excess skin of the outer upper eyelid or distinct hollowing of the upper eyelid over time. Injectable fillers such as Restylane Refyne or fat transfer can be used conservatively to provide structure and replace fullness to the upper eyelid, particularly just underneath the head of the eyebrow where hollowing is particularly noticeable. A special technique using blunt-tipped cannulas require minimal downtime and only a rare chance of bruising.
