Cellulite affects nearly 90% of women after puberty. It is characterized by uneven skin texture and dimpling in characteristic areas of the body including the thighs and buttocks. Cellulite is still poorly understood but due to multiple factors. These include anatomical variations of fat and connective tissue in women, changes in blood circulation, underlying inflammation, and female hormones.
Effective treatments for cellulite do exist. In patients with discrete, dimple-like cellulite, Cellfina is highly effective, offering long-term (likely permanent) improvement of cellulite with a single, in-office treatment.
Wavy, fine textural changes of cellulite are more challenging to treat but improvement can be made. This typically involves supporting the skin with proper support and tightening. Injectable collagen stimulation (Sculptra), radiofrequency skin tightening (Exilis), and acoustic wave therapy (Cellutone) may be used alone or in combination to help improve the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite treatment may be combined with other body contouring procedures including liposculpture and laser liposuction.
